Pensacola Loses a Landmark Skopelos on the Bay Closing After 50 Years of Service July 1, 2009 – It is with great regret that Gus Silivos and his family inform their many long time friends and customers that at end of August Skopelos will close its doors at the current location. The closure is the result of a four year legal battle with the Estate of original owner Paul Silivos over the right to purchase the restaurant property. During the 40 years that Gus has spent with Skopelos on the Bay – 35 of which were spent working beside his father, Paul Silivos – both oral and written agreements were made for Gus to continue operating Skopelos on the Bay at its present location. After Paul Silivos’ death, the land and the building were granted to other heirs of his estate, who have indicated they have chosen to pursue development of the property as a condominium. The past four years have been spent in litigation, as Gus and Nancy Silivos attempted to purchase the land and the building for the sole use of Skopelos on the Bay. There is still a possibility that the District Appeals court could rule in Gus’ favor, in which case Skopelos on the Bay may stay in its present location; however, the timing of an appeals court ruling is uncertain. Regardless of the decision, Gus remains the sole owner of the Skopelos on the Bay brand, recipes and legacy. “We continue to keep a positive outlook and are exploring other options,” said owner, operator and Chef Silivos. “Our greatest satisfaction has been to serve the Pensacola community and to build traditions at this location. We sincerely appreciate the support of our community and our staff – many of whom have been with us for years. We consider you part of the family.” Neither Scenic 90 Café nor Nancy’s Haute Affairs will be affected by this decision or any decision made by the appeals court. The Silivos’ invite patrons and friends to go online to www.myskopelos.com to share their stories from the past 50 years at Skopelos, and to join them before the end of August to enjoy a few more lasting memories.
